The Portrait of
Marriage

New Life Story of the Week

Shelly'sBob and Annette Shelly started attending New Life in 1988 and were blessed by a worship style that was newto them. For several years they grew in their faith and understanding of the Lord, then felt led to attend church elsewhere. After a few years they really began to struggle and felt something was missing. They decided to visit New Life again. “We weren’t sure how we would be treated after leaving” they said, “but we were amazed… welcomed back with open arms, smiles and hugs. We saw several old friends and many faces we didn’t know, but that first Sunday back was the most wonderful feeling. The preaching was great, the music was great, and  the people were great; but most important was the awesome presence of the Lord. After the service an old friend gave us a tour of the new areas of the building. We have been back ever since. That was 7 years ago. We have made new friends and always enjoy seeing our old friends as well. We are so grateful to the wonderful pastoral staff, as well as our church family, and we are happy to say that the New Life family is stuck with us now. We don’t plan to go anywhere again!  We are so grateful the Lord  led us back to the church we love so much. Thank you New Life for all you mean to us. We are so happy to be here!”

Do you find this encouraging? Have you encouraged others with your story?

New Life Story of The Week

IMG_0016Mike & Marcia Barker have been attending New Life for ten years. Joining a Small Group was the beginning of many wonderful Christian friendships. They love the Biblical teachings that guide in everyday life situations. Recently they experienced a home invasion by a convicted felon that had been charged previously with armed robbery. He was hiding in their basement while they were home. They believe it was the hand of God and His protection that kept them safe. Marcia’s Small Group Bible study that very morning had been praying for them. Mike & Marcia can’t say enough about Christian fellowship and coming together with other believers. They say, “Thank you New Life!”

Tuning Into God’s Heart

Tune
Since the beginning of this year I started reading through the bible & recently came across a passage that I’ve read & even preached from several times. Yet something resonated with me that was different then how I’ve looked at this passage before.

You see, it can be hard to hear God in the busyness of life. We’ve all been through it before. We originally have certain ideas or plans but then things get really hectic. Whether it involves work, relationships, or if you’re like me… You have kids & things always seem to come up.  I was reading in 1 Kings & I came across this passage where Elijah had a showdown between God & 450 prophets of Baal. There we see the prophets struggle while God burns up the sacrifice in a way that gets everyone’s attention on Mount Carmel. Then shortly after that Elijah outruns Ahab on foot while Ahab was riding a horse & chariot.

Yet even after all this Elijah receives a threat from Jezebel & is afraid. So he hides in a cave & desires that everything would just be over. It’s at this moment, that we see Elijah at his lowest & God shows up & teaches us a great lesson in verse 12.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:12b

Music is such a huge part of my life. If you’ve ever been to a symphony, there’s a moment just before the performance begins where the lights go down & the symphony tunes. It’s a strange sound, nothing at all like the music that will start a few minutes later. But, I love that sound. It sounds like anticipation. It’s a sound that tells you that something wonderful is about to happen.

As a musician I’m always tuning my guitar. Especially if the room is cold or if I just got done replacing a broken string. Tuning is vital when it comes to music. Sometimes we feel like it can be an annoyance. But in reality, tuning is not a warning bell; it’s an alignment. For symphonies, one musician plays a single note, always the same note & each of the instruments joins in. They play, they listen & they adjust & play again. They keep going until all the sounds blend together, until there are united & aligned, in tune.

I love the line in the old hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” that says, “tune my heart”. I want that. I want my heart to sound like God’s. Did you know that if you put twogrand pianos in a room and play a note on one of them the corresponding string in the other piano will start to vibrate? I want the note God is playing to resonate in my heart.

In 1 Kings, God tells Elijah to go & stand on a mountain where He will pass by. There is wind & fire, even an earthquake, but God is not in the wind or the fire or the earthquake. God comes in a gentle whisper. I need to be still & hear that whisper; I need to tune my heart to it.

I cannot do the things God has planned for me if my heart is out of tune. No matter how carefully I try to serve God, if my heart is out of tune it’s all just garbage.

I think it’s so interesting that even professional musicians have to tune & they tune every single time they play. I want my life to be like that, to begin every day by listening for the voice of God & moving my heart.  Sometimes I feel like I’ve got to drag it along sometimes – until my heart, my attitude sounds like God’s. I want to go through my days in tune with Him. That’s why I have to remind myself multiple times daily to realign myself for what God has or else, I can get lost & out of sync with what God wants…

New Life Story of The Week 2

NLC StoryVeronica Pratt has been a part of New Life for about 2 yrs., a single mother of 4. In Veronica’s words, “Before going to church I lived a life of sin and darkness… full of anger, sadness, despair and I hid it with a fake smile and a lot of alcohol. Our lives were a mess… missing something and never really knew it. One day my kids came home with a flyer from school for Upward Basketball. Pastor Sharon invited us to church. I immediately felt out of place- ashamed and embarrassed of who I was- a single mom never married, a drinker, and so many other things. I left in the middle of service. Pastor Sharon never gave up. We came back 2 weeks later. That service was so powerful. The Holy Spirit brought me to my knees. God was that missing piece I had been looking for in all the wrong places. I walked out of church with a warm peaceful feeling all through my body and a REAL smile on my face for the first time in many years.

FB_20150417_22_26_39_Saved_Picture“Now there’s a true feeling of peace in our home and in our lives. We are reading, praying, studying, and growing together as a family. We are learning that just believing in God isn’t enough. We are developing a real relationship with him. God has healed my heart. No more alcohol, no more sadness, no more fears or doubts. Life isn’t perfect but it’s so much easier to get through the rough stuff knowing that almighty God is there to pull us through. Thank you Lord. Thank you, thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you.”

New Life Story of The Week

Mark and Teresa Dubbeldam began attending New Life in November of 2012, just after moving here from Australia! They were looking for a church home where the Word of God was spoken clearly, and without compromise. They come from Catholic & Baptist backgrounds. They look forward to coming to church because it not only gives them the encouragement they need as individuals, but as a couple living for the Lord in their daily life. As they say, “It’s a great way to start our Sunday and our week at work as well as here at home.”
